BAA’s Tyrone Sutton Steps Up As Interim Head Of School

Since 2008, Tyrone Sutton has held various teaching and leadership roles at Boston Arts Academy including Dean of Arts. He also served as Chair of the Humanities Department and Co-Chair of the Music Department.
Sutton is the founder of Boston Arts Academy’s award-winning Spirituals Ensemble which has performed state-wide and with leading artists. Prior to his work at Boston Arts Academy, Sutton worked in arts education and policy at the Arts Education Partnership in Washington D.C. and served as Assistant for the Coordinator for Visual and Performing Arts for Cambridge Public Schools in Cambridge, MA.

Sutton received his bachelor’s degree in Music Education from Texas State University-San Marcos, his master’s degree in education with a concentration in arts education from Harvard University Graduate School of Education, and a graduate certificate from Boston University’s Creative Educational Leadership Institute. He was also the recipient of a fellowship from the Rockefeller Brothers Fund.
In addition to his work at Boston Arts Academy, Sutton serves as the principal organist at the Historic Charles Street A.M.E. Church in Boston. He has also served as a Teaching Fellow with Boston Children’s Chorus and as Vocal Ensemble Director for Berklee City Music.
Sutton is Interim Head of School for the 2023–2024 school year as BAA’s Governing Board leads a process to fill the position permanently.
