Bill Brett

An award-winning photojournalist, Bill Brett is well known for his extensive career at The Boston Globe and his coverage of many of the region's most prominent news events and countless social happenings.  

He began his career at The Globe as a part-time photographer at the young age of 18 and was full time at the age of 19 and later became the chief photographer at the age of 27. Mr. Brett’s photographs can be seen in various publications, including The Globe and on his website, reaching a wide audience. Although Bill officially retired as the Director of Photography/Associate Editor in 2001, his active involvement in charitable events continued. Over his 50-year career, he has captured countless fundraisers and events, raising awareness and donations for various organizations. 

Alongside his photography, Bill has been honored for his contributions and has received numerous accolades throughout his career including:   

  • Edwin T. Ramsdell Memorial Trophy: Bill won this prestigious award twice, which is given by the Boston Press Photographers Association to the first-place recipient in the spot news category of the still photography division. He won the award at the age of 20 for a photo from the 1967 World Series and won again in his final year as a full-time member of The Boston Globe. 

  • Award of Excellence for Photography: Bill received this award in the 27th annual creative competition of the Society for News Design. It was given for his portrait of Stephan Ross at Boston's Holocaust Memorial, featured in his first book, "Boston: All One Family." 

  • President's Award from the Urban League of Eastern Massachusetts: Bill and Carol Beggy, who has written the text for all of Bill's books, shared this award in 2006 for their work on "Boston: All One Family." 

  • Paul Harris Award from the Rotary Club of Quincy: Bill received this award in May 2023 for his support of charitable work in the Greater Boston area. 

Bill's published works showcase his passion for Boston and its people. His books, including "Boston: All One Family," "Boston: An Extended Family," "Boston: A Year in the Life: A Photographic Journey," "Boston: Inspirational Women," and "Boston: Irish," feature the city and its diverse inhabitants. Notably, "Boston: Irish" was presented as a gift to the Catholic Church at the Vatican by an Irish American delegation from Boston.  

Currently, he is dedicated to his seventh book project, capturing powerful images of veterans, their families, and their supporters. He resides in Hingham with his wife and has four children and nine grandchildren.
